“In Their Own Words” - Stories about the War
Members of Ginen I Hila’ I Maga’taotao Siha (From the Tongues of the Noble People) will share stories about the war entitled “IN THEIR OWN WORDS” on Sunday, July 19, 2009 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at the University of Guam’s Fine Arts Theater. Tickets are on sale at $10 per person.
Stories from survivors and descendants of World War II have been gathered from personal interviews and those handed down from elders according to Beverly Ann Acfalle, president and organizer of the event.
Because the subject matter is sensitive, names have not been used or have been given substitutes out of respect to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice as well as those who’ve endured extreme hardship and torture at the hands of the invading forces says Acfalle. Because religious songs, prayers and belief in the Blessed Virgin’s intercession were dominant in the lives of the CHamoru people, the experiences of the war may bring up unpleasant memories and those who will listen to the stories are advised that it may be emotional at times adds Acfalle.
Other members of the group include Anthony “Malia” Ramirez, Annie B. Pineda, Patricia Ann Quichocho, Juanita T. Peredo, Antonia Salas, Peter R. Onedera, Felix C. Benavente, Charissa Lynn Aguon, Rosa Salas Palomo, Lourdes A. Benavente, Peter Jon “Makåhna” Duenas, Selina Onedera-Salas, Vincent John Salas, and Victor Tuquero.
Light refreshments will be sold during the one night event.

Shucks - missed it, again! Have you seen the documentary PREL (Pacific Resources for Education and Learning) produced… “An Island Invaded”? *My mom was part of the team to put the WWII survivor stories together. They usually air parts of it on PBS Guam during the Liberation Day parade coverage. I have ONE copy - let me know if you’d like to borrow to watch. =D

There were a lot of intimate stories we were privy to telling that have never been told before. And what made this even more special is that most of our members told stories passed down from only family members. What an experience… I look forward to doing this again next year!
